According to the Borders Gift Cards FAQ, at the checkout stage of placing an order the Borders gift card balance will be shown after you enter the 16-digit gift card number and before you submit the transaction for payment. It didn’t state however that there is a direct method to check your balance online.

To know your gift card balance through phone, you can call 1-877-728-4000 or the number at the back of your Borders gift card.

You can also check your gift card balance in-person at any Borders store.
