Credit Card vs. Debit Card vs. Gift Card

A credit card allows you to have purchase something in exchange for a financial liability to the bank. This means that the card doesn’t hold any amount or value, but it allows you to purchase something in advance. Most of these cards availed from known banks but are affiliated to VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express.

A debit card is also availed from a bank. This is usually tied up to a bank account, meaning that any transaction made through the debit card does not put you in debt, but it automatically deducts them from your account. This generally does not include fees as compared to credit cards.

A gift card is a prepaid card that does not put you in financial obligation to a bank, nor does it deduct value from your bank account. You don’t run the risk of getting into debt or over-withdrawing your money in the bank. The financial value is kept within the card and automatically reduces every time it’s used for purchase of any goods or services. This means that you have total control of your card’s value. You will only spend the amount loaded in it.

Why Gift Credit Card?

Gift credit cards are originally designed as an alternative to giving people cash, or in a sense, a gift. These prepaid cards often allow people to make convenient purchases anywhere a major credit card is honored. The idea is as simple as buying a gift card, setting an initial balance, and then spending according to limited balance on that card. Many prepaid gift credit cards will allow the holders to add money to the account or to reload them.

Gift credit cards are probably better understood as prepaid debit cards. The gift credit card combines some of the features of both a gift card and a credit or debit card. It is a gift card because the card is prepaid and is pre-loaded with an initial amount. It’s neither a pure credit card nor a debit card, but it can be accepted in most places where these credit cards or debit cards are accepted. This is the reason why most of the gift credit cards are associated to known credit institutions like MasterCard, American Express, Discover and VISA.

Gift Credit Cards are not total substitute to a credit card. Obviously, there are some limitations. Some shops, both physical stores and online shops, don’t recognize all gift credit cards. Again, gift credit cards have limited value. This means that you won’t be able to purchase items that exceeds the amount in the card, unless the merchant will allow you to pay the remaining balance in cash or by using other cards

Simply put, gift credit cards can fill some of the gaps, but they’re not a complete alternative to having a credit card account. Gift credit cards should be treated and perceived as gift card.
